Treats build trust and training—but too many can quietly add weight. The goal is smart rewards, not zero joy.
The 10% guideline
A common rule of thumb is that treats stay around 10% or less of daily calories. Use it as a guide, then adjust with your veterinarian if your pet needs weight loss or a special diet.
Better treat habits
- Break treats into pea-sized pieces for training
- Use part of the regular meal as rewards during sessions
- Choose soft treats for fast delivery in training
- Save highest-value rewards for hard skills (recall, vet handling)
Foods to avoid (general education)
Many human foods are unsafe for pets (for example, chocolate, xylitol, grapes/raisins, alcohol). When in doubt, do not share. Confirm safety with your vet or a trusted veterinary resource.
Training without a treat bag every time
- Praise and play as rewards for some dogs and cats
- Life rewards: leash on, door opens, toy comes out
- Variable rewards after a skill is learned
