Some pets startle easily, hide during storms, or struggle when routines change. You cannot remove every stressor—but you can make home feel safer.
Build predictable structure
- Similar meal and walk times most days
- A quiet rest zone away from foot traffic
- Safe hiding spots for cats (high or covered)
- Crate or bed as a positive place for dogs—not punishment
Sound and space
- Soft background sound during fireworks or storms
- Close curtains if street activity triggers barking or pacing
- Give space when guests arrive; force-free greetings only
Body language to notice
- Yawning, lip licking, whale eye, tucked tail
- Excessive grooming, hiding, or house soiling changes
- Destructive behavior when left alone
Persistent anxiety, aggression, or sudden behavior changes deserve a veterinary visit. Medical issues can look like “behavior problems.”
Comfort tools
Soft rest spots, familiar scents, puzzle feeding, and gentle play can help some pets settle. Avoid flooding a scared pet with forced interaction.
