Retractable leads take skill to use safely. Keep it locked short near roads, cars, cyclists and other dogs — a dog at full extension can reach the kerb before you can react.

• Never grab the extended cord with a bare hand. A running dog can pull it through your fingers and cause serious friction burns.
• Attach to a harness rather than a collar. A dog hitting the end of an extended lead at speed takes a hard jolt to the neck.
• Check the cord and clasp for fraying before every walk and replace at the first sign of wear.
• Not suitable for dogs that lunge, or for anyone who cannot comfortably hold the dog's weight.
